Riga's Sound Forest Festival (Skanu Mezs in Latvian) offers a quirky line-up of unconventional and experimental musical anarchists, performing in the dockland Andrejsala area of the city.
Skaņu mežs or Sound Forest, Riga adventurous music and film festival is back for the sixth year with it’s ever biggest programe. Festival will take place on May 3, 7, 9 and 10 at Grīvas mēbeles, Daugavgrīvas iela 31k-3. Tickets will be sold from March 31. For the May 3 and 7 concerts tickets at Ticket Service (www.ticketservice.lv) will cost 7 lats (by entrance 9 lats), for May 9 and 10 concerts – 8 lats (by entrance 10 lats). Four day festival pass for 21 lats will be available just at the Ticket Service.

Line-up of the first two days includes such new and exciting artists as prepared piano master Hauschka; Marcus Schmickler, luminary of contemporary composition also known for his work with proto-krautrock band Pluramon; Alva Noto, the accomplished aesthetician of digital audiovisual minimalism and Laub with the participation of AGF, the poetress of electronic music; Quartet Twentyonetwentyone that brings together four highly original young Lithuanian electronics musicians; the exciting Latvian “noise'n'roll” band PuseH PuseW and KSRPS, an idiosyncratic voice within Latvian electronic music.

On May 9 one will be offered to experience the acclaimed audiovisual diffusion session by Russell Haswell and Florian Hecker that is based on UPIC programe developed by Iannis Xenakis and has gathered interest also in the contemporary art circles; duo of Icelandic cello player Hildur Gudnadottir (she co-operated also with Mum and Throbbing Gristle) and ambient music wizard BJNilsen; French multiinstrumentalist Colleen who all alone by herself brings to life a beautiful sounding chamber ensemble. One of the highlights will be Marissa Nadler, the acclaimed singer of American dream-folk. On the more “outgoing” side there will be such an excellent artist as 2/5 BZ or Serhat Koksal with his “orientalcore” that has been played also at the famous John Peel sessions. The Bug with MC Warrior Queen will offer some of the rawest and most interesting sound from the contemporary dub revival. Team Brick, a noise/a capella musician, is a highly original and funny new voice within indie music that has been noticed also by Portishead that invited him to play at All Tomorrow's Parties in December 2007.

May 10 will be fairly heavy night with emphasis on free jazz, noise, drone and metal. Shining, one of the presently most talked about bands in the long array of Norwegian new music luminaries, will play; one will see in European context a rare performance by the great Israeli doom-dub band Lietterschpich; Ives #1, comprising some of the best free jazz/hardcore virtuosos will performe. One will be able to experience duo of one of the most accomplished drummers Chris Corsano (he plays on Bjork's Volta) and American violinist/drone veteran C Spencer Yeh / Burning Star Core. The psychedelic folk legends Six Organs of Admittance will provide more soothing end to the festival.

Parallel to concerts on May 9 and 10 a meticously selected experimental film programe by Vienna's Sixpackfilm and Berlin's Handclaps will be shown.

On May 12 at the Latvian Academy of Arts a workshop in improvised music by Burning Star Core and the doom-metal saxophone player Antoine Chessex (who will also perform at the festival) will be presented. If interested, please, write to zane@skanumezs.lv.
